Pears are particularly flavoursome once they come into season in October, so this fruit is a prime pick for jam-making during this time. The addition of ginger gives a complimentary kick and by incorporating cooking apples, you can create a tasty jam for all the family. HOW TO MAKE PEAR & GINGER JAM

  1. Peel your pears and apples
  2. Chop the fruit into smaller chunks
  3. Put 2 small plates in the freezer to test later
  4. Place all the apples and half the pears into a preserving pan
  5. Pour enough water in to cover the fruit
  6. Simmer gently for about 40 mins/until they are soft and gooey
  7. Take the pan off the heat
  8. Add: ginger, sugar, pectin, lemon juice and zest
  9. Add the remainder of the chopped pears
  10. Put the pan back on the heat and dissolve the sugar gently
  11. Bring to the boil once the sugar has dissolved fully
  12. Boil rapidly for about 15 minutes, or until setting point has been reached.
  13. Add a knob of butter if you see any scum on top
  14. Spoon a small amount of jam onto your chilled saucer to test if it has set
  15. Push the top lightly to see if it wrinkles
  16. If it wrinkles, it has reached the setting point
  17. If there is still a runny texture, return the pan to heat
  18. Repeat the test after a few minutes until it has set properly
  19. Leave to cool before scooping the jam into your sterilised jars
  20. Store in a dark place until you are ready to eat.

This recipe is imaginative and fun to try, as well as being a clever way to incorporate immune system-boosting ginger into your diet during the autumn and winter months. Try it today!
